The implementation of activities in this area takes into account the 3rd Sustainable Development Objective that defines as priorities until 2030, the following: reduce the maternal mortality rate, end the preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age, with a focus on the neonatal period, and ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health services, including family planning, information and education, as well as the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programs.

Mozambique continues to face difficulties in reducing neonatal and maternal mortality. The maternal mortality rate went from 500.1 to 451.6 for every 100,000 live births, while the infant mortality rate went from 93.6 in 2007 to 67.3 in 2017 (INE, 2017 Census).

Main objectives

• Contribute to the generation of knowledge on the efficacy and safety of new drugs and vaccines used in pregnancy

• Contribute to the generation of knowledge on epidemiology, health determinants and pathophysiology that affect women during pregnancy and the postpartum period

• Contribute to the generation of knowledge on innovative forms of access, use and impact of interventions on maternal and reproductive health

• Promote the assessment of innovative tools that facilitate access to health care for pregnant and vulnerable women
